About this module

A school teaches ecological values through its own operations, whether it means to or not.

A school's stated commitment to sustainability means little if its own daily operations, its waste, its resource use, its relationship to the land it sits on, tell a different story, and students notice that gap more acutely than most adults realize. This module builds ecological intelligence as an institutional leadership practice, giving a teacher stepping into wider influence concrete ways to align a school's actual operations with the planetary stewardship it claims to value.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why a school's actual operations teach ecological values more powerfully than any curriculum unit does.
  • A few concrete ways to align a school's daily operations more closely with genuine planetary stewardship.
  • Where this teacher's own school's stated values and actual practices currently diverge on this front.
  • A realistic first step toward closing that gap at an institutional level.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Operations as curriculum

What's understood about how a school's actual daily operations function as a powerful, often unacknowledged curriculum in ecological values.

Lane 2 · Practice

An operations-alignment practice

A short audit identifying one concrete gap between this school's stated sustainability values and its actual daily operations.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What is my school's campus actually teaching?

Reflection on what a student would conclude about this school's real ecological values just from watching how it operates.

Outcome

"I can name one real gap between my school's stated and actual ecological values, and a step toward closing it."
