About this module

Letting attention widen past the self, on purpose.

After two years spent largely turned inward, toward noticing their own inner life and building their own capacity to choose, this module marks a deliberate shift in direction: attention widening outward, toward the people and situations around them. That widening builds directly on the inner work already done, since a teenager who can read their own inner life clearly is finally in a position to notice someone else's. This module makes that widening of attention a practiced skill, carried into ordinary, everyday moments.

What they'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why turning attention outward builds on, rather than replaces, the inner awareness from the first two years.
  • A simple practice for noticing someone else's experience more fully in an ordinary moment.
  • A real opportunity this week to practice widening their attention toward someone specific.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why outward attention depends on inward awareness

What's understood about how a stable sense of one's own inner state makes it easier, not harder, to attend fully to someone else's.

Lane 2 · Practice

A noticing-someone-else practice

A short exercise for genuinely attending to another person's experience in a specific, real moment.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Who have I actually been noticing?

Reflection on the past week, examined for moments attention stayed inward when it could have widened.

Outcome

"I can let my attention widen toward someone else without losing track of my own."
