About this module

Every school has an emotional culture, named or not.

Beneath any school's official values sits a real, often unspoken emotional culture, how conflict actually gets handled, what resistance to change actually looks like, that shapes staff behavior far more than any mission statement does. This module teaches a teacher moving into culture design work to read that emotional culture accurately, so that resistance can be met as useful information rather than as an obstacle to push past.

What you'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • How to read a school's real, unspoken emotional culture, apart from its stated values.
  • What resistance to change is usually actually communicating, beneath its surface.
  • One concrete way to respond to resistance as information, rather than as an obstacle to overcome.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Reading organizational emotional culture

What's understood about how an organization's unspoken emotional culture predicts its actual behavior more reliably than its stated values.

Lane 2 · Practice

A resistance-reading practice

A short practice for pausing on staff resistance to a change, and reading what it's actually communicating before responding to it.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What is my school's real emotional culture?

Reflection on the gap, if any, between this school's stated values and its actual emotional culture.

Outcome

"I can read my school's real emotional culture, not just its stated one."
