About this module

Hearing what behavior is actually saying.

A child's difficult behavior is rarely just noise to manage; it's almost always communication, carrying a message about an unmet need, an overwhelmed nervous system, or a feeling with nowhere else to go. This module teaches a parent to read behavior this way, as a message rather than a problem to eliminate, which changes not just how a parent responds but what they're actually responding to.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why difficult behavior usually functions as communication rather than simple defiance.
  • A practical way of asking what need or feeling a specific behavior might be expressing.
  • The difference between addressing a behavior and addressing the message underneath it.
  • Practice reading one recent difficult behavior for the message it might have been carrying.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

What behavior is actually telling us

What's understood about how children, especially younger ones, communicate unmet needs through behavior before they have the words to do it directly.

Lane 2 · Practice

A behavior-as-message practice

A short exercise for pausing on a difficult behavior and asking what it might actually be communicating.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What was my child actually trying to tell me?

Reflection on a recent difficult moment, reread for the message underneath the behavior.

Outcome

"I can read my child's behavior as communication, and respond to the message instead of just the behavior."
