About this module

Building a real gap between feeling and reacting.

Once a parent can recognize what's happening in their body and name the feeling underneath it, the next capacity to build is an actual pause, a usable space between the feeling and whatever happens next. This module treats that pause as a trainable skill rather than a matter of willpower, offering a specific, repeatable practice for creating it even in the middle of a genuinely difficult parenting moment.

What you'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • A specific, repeatable practice for creating a real pause between a trigger and a response.
  • How to notice the earliest cue that a pause is needed, before a reaction has already taken over.
  • A realistic plan for practicing the pause in lower-stakes moments, so it's available during harder ones.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why a few seconds of pause changes the outcome

What's understood about how even a brief pause interrupts a reactive cycle and makes a chosen response more available.

Lane 2 · Practice

The parent's pause practice

A short, repeatable sequence designed to be used in a real moment with a child, not just in a quiet room.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What became possible in the pause?

Reflection on a recent reactive moment, and what might have gone differently with a few seconds of space.

Outcome

"I have a real pause between what I feel and what I do, and I know how to use it."
