About this module

Why naming comes before calming.

A parent who can't yet name what's happening inside them, beyond a general sense of being overwhelmed or on edge, has very little to actually work with in the heat of a difficult moment. This module builds a precise, usable vocabulary for a parent's own inner states, treating accurate naming as the necessary first step toward regulation rather than a soft, optional add-on. A feeling that's been named specifically is a feeling that can actually be worked with; a feeling that stays vague tends to simply run the show.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why naming an inner state precisely is a prerequisite for regulating it, not a separate, optional step.
  • A working vocabulary for parental states that goes beyond 'stressed' or 'fine.'
  • A simple habit of naming what's happening inside before reacting to a child's behavior.
  • Practice naming one real inner state from earlier today.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why naming changes what the brain does next

What's understood about how accurately labeling an emotional state engages regulation, a finding sometimes summarized as 'name it to tame it.'

Lane 2 · Practice

A precise naming practice

A short exercise for pausing on a strong inner state and naming it with more precision than usual.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What was actually happening in me, back there?

Reflection on a recent reactive parenting moment, named specifically rather than left as a general sense of having lost it.

Outcome

"I can name what's actually happening inside me, specifically enough to work with it."
