About this module

Offering something real, not performative, to the people around them.

Service can easily become something a teenager does for how it looks, a line on an application or a post worth sharing, rather than something that genuinely responds to a real need. This module draws a clear line between performative service and the real kind, and asks a teen to find and carry out one act of service that responds to an actual need in their community, independent of whether anyone else ever sees it. The usefulness of the act is what matters here, not its visibility.

What they'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • The difference between service that responds to a real need and service that mainly serves how it looks.
  • How to identify a genuine need in their own community, rather than assuming what one might be.
  • A realistic plan for one act of service that responds to that need, carried out regardless of who sees it.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

What makes service meaningful rather than performative

What's understood about the difference between service that responds to a real need and service that mainly signals character.

Lane 2 · Practice

Finding a real need

A short process for identifying an actual, specific need in their community, rather than a generic gesture.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Would I still do this if no one saw it?

Reflection on their planned act of service, tested against whether visibility is part of why they're doing it.

Outcome

"I can offer something genuinely useful to my community, whether or not anyone else ever sees it."
