About this module

A dysregulated room cannot absorb a lesson, however good it is.

However well-designed a lesson is, it cannot land in a room that doesn't feel safe, which is why this module treats regulation not as a prerequisite handled once at the start of the year but as the first order of business in every single class period. Building a regulation-first classroom means designing the room's rhythms, transitions, and opening minutes around nervous system safety first, with academic content arriving only once that foundation is actually in place.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why regulation has to be addressed before content, in every class period, not just at the start of the year.
  • A few concrete classroom rhythms and transitions that build regulation into the structure itself.
  • How to read, quickly, whether a room is regulated enough yet for content to land.
  • What changes about lesson pacing once regulation is treated as the first priority.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why regulation must come first

What's understood about why a dysregulated nervous system cannot reliably access new content, regardless of how well the content is designed.

Lane 2 · Practice

Designing the room's rhythm

A short practice of redesigning one class period's opening minutes and transitions around regulation first.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What's actually happening in my room's first five minutes?

Reflection on this teacher's current opening routine, examined honestly for how much regulation it actually builds.

Outcome

"My classroom's rhythm now puts regulation before content, every time."
