About this module

A classroom runs on emotion whether or not anyone names it.

Every classroom moment carries an emotional undercurrent, shame at a wrong answer, pride at a breakthrough, anxiety before a test, and a teacher who can name these currents out loud gives students a vocabulary for their own inner life that most will not get anywhere else. This module builds the foundational emotional literacy a teacher needs, including a clear-eyed look at how shame specifically operates in a classroom and what tends to quietly deepen it rather than dissolve it.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • A working vocabulary for naming emotion accurately, in a student and in oneself.
  • How shame specifically operates in a classroom, and what deepens it versus relieves it.
  • A few concrete phrases for naming emotion out loud without making a moment bigger than it needs to be.
  • Where a teacher's own emotional language is still thin, and what to build next.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Shame in the classroom

What's understood about how shame differs from guilt, and why shame specifically shuts down learning rather than motivating it.

Lane 2 · Practice

Naming emotion out loud

A short set of plain phrases for naming what a student or a teacher is feeling, without escalating the moment.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Where is my own emotional vocabulary thin?

Reflection on which emotions a teacher finds easiest and hardest to name, in themselves and in students.

Outcome

"I have a working vocabulary for the emotions actually running my classroom."
