About this module

Saying out loud what this family actually stands for.

Most families operate on a set of values that everyone more or less senses but no one has ever actually said out loud, which leaves those values vulnerable to drifting under pressure. This module asks a parent, ideally alongside the rest of the family, to name what this family actually stands for in plain, explicit language, so those values become something to return to on purpose rather than something assumed and hoped for.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why values that stay unspoken tend to drift under pressure, even when everyone senses them.
  • A structured way of identifying three to five values this family actually wants to live by.
  • How to put those values into plain, memorable language everyone in the family can actually use.
  • A real, upcoming moment to use one of these named values as a decision-making reference.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why explicit values hold up better than assumed ones

What's understood about how families with clearly articulated values navigate conflict and pressure more steadily than those operating on assumption alone.

Lane 2 · Practice

A family values exercise

A guided process for identifying and naming a handful of values this family genuinely wants to live by, in plain language.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Do we actually live these, or just assume them?

Reflection on a recent family decision, checked against whether a named value was actually used to make it.

Outcome

"We've named what we stand for, in words plain enough to actually use."
