About this module

Letting the world do some of the teaching.

A parent doesn't have to be the source of every lesson a child learns; the natural world, and the natural consequences of a child's own choices, are often better teachers than any lecture could be. This module builds a parent's trust in that process, helping them identify where a natural consequence can be allowed to teach on its own, rather than being preempted by a warning, a rescue, or an imposed punishment.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • The difference between a natural consequence and a punishment imposed by a parent.
  • How to recognize situations where a natural consequence can be safely allowed to teach on its own.
  • Where a parent has been preempting a lesson the world was already about to teach.
  • Practice stepping back from one situation this week to let a natural consequence play out.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why natural consequences teach differently

What's understood about how consequences that arise naturally from a choice tend to teach more durably than consequences imposed by a parent.

Lane 2 · Practice

A step-back practice

A short practice for identifying a safe situation where a natural consequence can be allowed to unfold without parental intervention.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What is the world already teaching here?

Reflection on a recent situation where a natural consequence might have taught more than a parental warning did.

Outcome

"I can trust natural consequences to teach, and step back enough to let them."
