About this module

Telling their own story, in their own words.

By this point, a teenager has spent three years building self-awareness, agency, and the practice of contributing outward, which leaves them with more material than most people ever gather about who they actually are. This module asks them to do something simple and surprisingly rare: write their own story, in their own words, rather than letting it be told by a transcript, a social feed, or someone else's version of events. The story that comes out of this module is meant to be genuinely theirs, which is a different and more durable kind of accurate than any fixed, final account.

What they'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why writing their own story matters, even though it will keep changing after this.
  • A structured way of identifying the moments that actually shaped who they've become.
  • The difference between a story that's accurate and one that's simply been repeated often.
  • A first written draft of their own story, in their own words.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why narrative identity matters

What's understood about how the stories people tell about themselves shape, and are shaped by, their actual sense of identity.

Lane 2 · Practice

Mapping the shaping moments

A guided exercise identifying the handful of moments that have most shaped their sense of who they are.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Whose version of my story have I been telling?

Reflection on which parts of their story have been theirs, and which were inherited from someone else's telling.

Outcome

"I can tell my own story, in my own words, instead of letting someone else's version stand in for it."
