About this module

Finding a voice that can hold its ground in a room.

Plenty of teenagers have a clear sense of what they think and still find the words stop somewhere between the thought and the room, especially when the room includes people whose opinion feels like it carries more weight than their own. This module works directly with that gap, treating the ability to speak up as a skill built through small, repeatable attempts rather than a trait some people simply have. It pairs the inner clarity built earlier in the year with the practical, relational courage of actually being heard, by a teacher, a group of friends, or a family member.

What they'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • What typically happens physically and emotionally in the moments right before speaking up.
  • A few concrete phrases and openings that make it easier to enter a conversation with something to say.
  • A low-stakes situation to practice speaking up in this week.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why speaking up feels physically risky

What's known about the body's social-threat response, and why it activates even in ordinary conversations.

Lane 2 · Practice

Finding an opening line

Practice with a few reliable ways to enter a conversation and say something real.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What am I actually trying to say?

Reflection on a recent moment they stayed quiet, and what they might say if given the moment again.

Outcome

"I can find my voice in a room and use it, even when it would be easier to stay quiet."
