About this module

Tracing a belief back to where it actually started.

Many of the beliefs a teenager carries about themselves, from how smart they are to how lovable they are, were never actually chosen; they were absorbed from a comment, a comparison, or a moment that happened to land hard. This module teaches the simple but powerful habit of tracing a belief back to its origin, asking who told them that, and whether it's still true, or was ever fully true to begin with. The aim isn't to discard every inherited belief, but to make sure the ones a teen keeps are actually theirs.

What they'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • How beliefs about the self typically form, often from a single remembered moment or repeated message.
  • A simple method for tracing a current belief back to its original source.
  • The difference between a belief that still holds up and one that was never fully true.
  • Practice choosing, on purpose, which inherited beliefs to keep and which to let go of.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

How self-beliefs get formed early

What developmental psychology shows about how a few formative moments can harden into a lasting belief about who someone is.

Lane 2 · Practice

Tracing a belief to its source

A guided exercise for picking one limiting belief and tracing it back to the moment or message it came from.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Is this belief actually mine?

Journaling on which inherited beliefs still feel true, and which are ready to be set down.

Outcome

"I can trace my beliefs back to where they came from, and choose which ones are actually mine to keep."
